What is Botox®?
Wrinkles develop on your face for several reasons. Your body naturally produces certain substances that lift and hydrate the skin. Facial expressions are another reason you develop lines. The muscle contractions pinch the skin, perhaps hundreds of times each day. Eventually the skin cannot relax enough to smooth the wrinkles. This is known as “dynamic wrinkles,” and Botox® is formulated with a safe neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes the muscles so your skin can relax.
What are the Benefits of Botox®?
We recommend Botox® treatments for men and women who want:
- No downtime
- Anti-aging benefits on the forehead and around the eyes without surgery
- Treatments that take less than one hour
- Results that last for several months
How Does Botox® Work?
Using Botox® appropriately requires an in-depth knowledge of the facial muscles used when you frown or squint. By injecting Botox® at precise locations in these muscles, we can temporarily relax that area of your face and soften wrinkles. The results last four to six months.
Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®?
You can start using Botox® as early as your mid-30s to help reduce lines that may develop on your upper face. Botox® is approved by the FDA for treating:
- Horizontal lines on the forehead
- Vertical lines between the eyes
- Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
What Should I Expect from Botox®?
Botox® is administered into the facial muscles with a fine gauge needle. Most patients can tolerate the treatment comfortably, but we can use a numbing agent on your skin if needed. The needle is carefully inserted into the muscle and a small amount of Botox® is injected. Several injections are made along the muscles to treat wrinkles.
After the treatment, you may notice some pinpoint bleeding at each injection site, as well as tenderness, swelling and bruising. These symptoms result from the actual injection, not the Botox®. You should avoid rubbing the area, but you can apply ice to help with any discomfort. The symptoms should only last two to three days.
Full results from Botox® treatments can take up to seven days, and you may not need a follow-up treatment for four to six months.
